State legislators save free state park passes for California libraries
California’s State Library Parks Pass program secured $6. 75 million in funding, extending its life for another two years. Since its inception in 2021, the program has provided 33,000 passes through over 1,100 libraries statewide. A survey conducted by the California State Parks Foundation indicated that 63% of users cited cost as a barrier to visiting parks, while 90% expressed intentions to visit more than seven times annually with the pass. Governor Newsom’s decision came after a petition from the parks foundation, highlighting the program's importance for low-income and diverse communities.
Oakland Public Libraries currently have 300 park passes and 17 backpacks available for checkout. The park passes allow entry for one vehicle and its passengers but do not cover camping fees or permits. This initiative reaffirms California's commitment to making public lands accessible to all. As the July 4 holiday approaches, Oakland residents are encouraged to utilize this resource.
