Oakland Zoo evacuated due to nearby fire illegal fireworks keep firefighters busy over weekend

Oakland, CALocal News

Over the Fourth of July weekend, Oakland firefighters faced a surge in fire incidents, primarily attributed to illegal fireworks. A fire near the Oakland Zoo prompted an evacuation of visitors, though officials confirmed that the zoo remained safe. Battalion Chief Ryan Meineke emphasized that their rapid response was facilitated by heightened staffing on risky days like Independence Day. The Oakland Fire Department logged 295 emergency calls, with approximately one-third related to fire incidents. A duplex on 78th Avenue was damaged by illegal fireworks, tragically resulting in the deaths of two dogs.

Hospitalizations occurred overnight due to injuries linked to the fireworks chaos. The fire department's proactive measures, including increased staffing, proved essential in managing the incidents. City officials are likely to review fireworks regulations following the spike in illegal activity.
