Oakland airport changes its name again

Oakland, CALocal News

The Port of Oakland will rename the airport to "Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport," abandoning the previous name due to ongoing legal issues. San Francisco has sued Oakland, claiming that the previous name misled passengers and infringed on its trademark rights. A preliminary injunction from a federal judge requires Oakland to cease using the contested name while the lawsuit unfolds. Craig Simon, the Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, expressed that the new name highlights Oakland's identity and location. The airport board will review this proposed name change on July 10, emphasizing the need for a resolution amid legal uncertainty.

Simon noted that the new name does not incorporate the entirety of San Francisco's airport name and leads with "Oakland. " The legal battle has incurred costs for Oakland, although Simon did not disclose the figures. San Francisco's city attorney has yet to respond to inquiries about the name change.
