Minneapolis police recruitment is finally on the upswing. Legacy families are part of it.
Minneapolis police recruitment has increased significantly, with applications rising by 133% by the end of 2024. The department, however, still has only 578 active sworn officers, compared to a record low of 560 earlier in the year. Many of the new recruits are part of "legacy families," including father-son duos like Macauley and Patrick Reuben. Chief Brian O'Hara has observed a notable improvement in department morale, crediting younger officers who were absent during the tumultuous events following George Floyd's murder. Officers now exhibit a more positive demeanor, often laughing and engaging with one another during meetings.
This shift in atmosphere is crucial for the healing process within the department. Macauley Reuben, now a community service officer, reflects on his father's positive influence, stating he never heard complaints about police work growing up. The Minneapolis Police Department is working towards rebuilding trust and community relationships as it adapts to its new challenges.
