Republicans seek to gut federal funding for three Minnesota transit projects

Minneapolis, MNLocal News

St. Louis County Commissioner Keith Nelson criticized Minnesota's Republican congressional delegation for requesting the removal of federal funding for the Northern Lights Express (NLX) train project. Nelson recently met with U. S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy's staff, who assured him that funding for the transit line connecting Minneapolis and Duluth was secure.

However, two days later, the delegation, including Rep. Pete Stauber, sent a letter to an appropriations subcommittee advocating for the elimination of funding for the NLX and two other rail projects, the Northstar Commuter Rail line and the proposed Blue Line light-rail extension. Supporters assert that the NLX would significantly enhance regional tourism and provide essential transportation for veterans traveling to the Minneapolis Veterans Medical Center. Nelson expressed deep disappointment in Stauber's lack of support and his refusal to engage in discussions with local leaders about the project's value. The NLX's bipartisan backing highlights its potential economic impact on the region.

Advocates view the project as vital for revitalizing local infrastructure and improving access to essential services. As funding decisions loom, the future of the NLX remains uncertain amid this political conflict.
