Metro Transit police, partner agencies announce initiative aimed at fixing Green Line safety problems

Minneapolis, MNLocal News

Metro Transit police announced a new initiative aimed at improving safety along the Green Line light rail, in response to increasing public concerns about crime and nuisance behaviors. Interim Chief Joe Dotseth stated the goal is to transform the line into a "model of transit safety excellence. " Business owners, however, expressed skepticism regarding the initiative's effectiveness, citing ongoing issues like vandalism and public drug use. The initiative includes bolstering police presence and partnering with local law enforcement and social services to address both crime and the needs of vulnerable populations. Since August, more than 80% of cases in the University Avenue corridor have been charged, indicating a more proactive approach to law enforcement.

Additionally, the first quarter of 2025 saw a 55% increase in proactive police service calls compared to the previous year. Despite some positive feedback from local businesses, others continue to worry about persistent public nuisance issues impacting their operations. The initiative reflects a broader effort to reimagine public safety, focusing on care and support alongside enforcement.
