Judge rules Minneapolis Ward 2 DFL convention can take place on Saturday
A Hennepin County judge upheld the May 3, 2025, date for the Minneapolis DFL Ward 2 convention, despite a lawsuit seeking to reschedule it to June 1. Judge Karen Janisch emphasized that a temporary restraining order could disrupt the plans of hundreds of delegates already notified of the convention. The lawsuit, filed by delegates Anthony Scallon and Karen Karkula, accused incumbent Council Member Robin Wonsley of trying to manipulate the endorsement process for her benefit. Wonsley countered that rescheduling would disenfranchise many, particularly University of Minnesota students who would not be on campus in June. The DFL had initially moved the convention due to a venue issue but returned to the original date amid pressure from Wonsley.
Judge Janisch recognized that the convention could still face chaos and disputes, regardless of the scheduled date. The controversy led to the resignation of DFL chair Conrad Zbikowski, who faced threats of legal action over the convention. The ruling underscores the ongoing tensions within the Minneapolis DFL as the election approaches.
