Alleged mass shooters Hennepin jailbreak attempt foiled near public elevators
James Duane Ortley, accused of a mass shooting that left four dead, attempted to escape from a Minneapolis jail on October 22. During his escape attempt, Ortley injured several corrections officers by spraying them with a fire extinguisher. The incident unfolded in a meeting room where Ortley was with a "professional visitor. " As he approached the public elevators, deputies intervened, ultimately using a Taser to subdue him. He now faces multiple charges, including five counts of assaulting a peace officer and one count each of attempted escape and property damage.
Ortley is currently held on $2 million bail related to the April shooting that resulted in the deaths of four acquaintances. The Sheriff's Office has since updated procedures for handling professional visits to enhance security. A follow-up hearing regarding the escape attempt is scheduled for December 19.
