U Senate approves resolution to oppose Trump academic compact
The University Senate at the University of Minnesota passed a resolution opposing the Trump administration's "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education" with a vote of 123 to 18. Senators criticized the compact for potentially compromising academic freedom and the university's mission, labeling its provisions as “antithetical. ” Faculty members emphasized the urgency of the resolution, with professor Michael Gallope stating that academic freedom is at stake. The resolution, supported by over 60 faculty members, calls on President Rebecca Cunningham and the Board of Regents to reject the compact. Some senators voiced concerns about the implications of the compact, suggesting that parts could be beneficial, while others argued against any agreement with it.
Earlier this month, seven of the nine universities offered the compact declined participation. The compact mandates adherence to conservative values and restricts political discourse on campuses, raising alarms about its impact on free speech. This resolution reflects a broader movement in academia to safeguard independence from political pressures.
