Itasca Project leadership ends the business-led regional development group
The Itasca Project, a coalition established in 2004 to address regional challenges in the Twin Cities, is concluding its operations after two decades of impactful work. Leadership announced the decision to disband, stating that it was time to transition responsibilities to organizations like Greater MSP, which has absorbed many of its initiatives. Co-founder Tim Welsh highlighted that the project was never meant to last indefinitely and acknowledged the readiness of other organizations to carry on its mission. Under the new chair, Steve Grove, the decision followed a year of exploration regarding the project’s future. The Itasca Project played a crucial role in reshaping the local economic development strategy, moving away from competition to collaboration among sectors.
Greater MSP will now oversee programs previously managed by the Itasca Project, including partnerships with the University of Minnesota and Harvard Business School. Former chair Lynn Casey noted that while the work continues, it is vital for organizations to collaborate effectively. The decision marks a significant shift in regional development efforts, reflecting a broader commitment to tackling socioeconomic issues.
