New express bus service will replace Northstar rail line in Big Lake, Elk River
The Metropolitan Council voted to launch express bus service from Big Lake and Elk River to downtown Minneapolis, set to begin on January 5. This initiative replaces the Northstar commuter rail line, which will cease operations due to insufficient ridership and high costs. Nearly half of Northstar's passengers boarded in Big Lake and Elk River, highlighting the need for continued transit access. New Route 882 will provide travel times of 77 minutes from Big Lake and 51 minutes from Elk River, with a fare of $3. 25 one way.
The contract permits Metro Transit to run the service for two years, marking a significant expansion of service beyond the metro area. Additionally, two other routes will be introduced to serve areas previously connected by Northstar. The Met Council aims to capture current Northstar riders and provide reliable transit options for those commuting to downtown Minneapolis. This move reflects a broader effort to adapt public transportation services to changing ridership patterns.
