Three Minneapolis mayoral challengers back a stronger separation ordinance. Frey says they go too far.
Minneapolis mayoral candidates Omar Fateh, DeWayne Davis, and Jazz Hampton promote a petition seeking to strengthen the separation between local police and federal immigration enforcement. Their proposal includes measures to prevent police from assisting federal agents, as well as mandates to remove masked agents from protest areas. Mayor Jacob Frey supports some changes but argues that the candidates' demands could jeopardize public safety. Fateh, whose family has immigration ties, criticized the federal government's tactics under the Trump administration. Davis stressed the necessity of a clear demarcation between local police and federal agencies to protect democracy.
The ordinance currently bars city employees from asking about immigration status, but the candidates seek to expand these protections. The push comes after a June incident involving armed federal agents that angered local residents and led to protests. The candidates aim to address community concerns over federal actions and ensure local law enforcement does not engage in immigration enforcement.
