Minneapolis fire chief retiring after 30 years for job at Phyllis Wheatley
Minneapolis Fire Chief Bryan Tyner will retire at the end of the year after a distinguished 30-year career, transitioning to the executive director position at the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center. During his tenure, he emphasized the importance of community service and diversity within the fire department, launching initiatives like the EMS Pathways Academy to train underrepresented individuals in emergency medical services. Tyner's leadership was tested during the unrest following George Floyd's murder, where he managed a surge in fires while advocating for community safety. He cited the Francis Drake Hotel fire as one of the most memorable incidents he faced. The Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, which Tyner attended as a child, offers vital services such as childcare and job training.
Valerie Stevenson, the interim executive director, praised Tyner's commitment to the organization and its mission. The city is currently seeking a new fire chief, planning to appoint an interim leader after Tyner steps down on December 31. Tyner's extensive experience and local roots position him well to lead the community center in its ongoing efforts to serve north Minneapolis.
