Omar Fateh campaign fined for claiming DFL endorsement after it was revoked
Omar Fateh’s campaign received a $500 civil penalty for distributing campaign materials claiming DFL endorsement after the endorsement was revoked. Judges ruled the campaign's actions were negligent but found no intent to mislead voters regarding the endorsement status. The DFL revoked Fateh’s endorsement on August 21, and campaign materials were distributed on August 23. At a rally, Fateh's campaign informed supporters of the revocation while also training them to communicate the change. The judges noted the revocation was widely publicized and was unlikely to mislead voters.
Fateh's campaign took steps to correct the situation by ordering new materials shortly after the revocation. The complaint was brought by Timothy J. Keane, a donor to Mayor Jacob Frey's campaign, under state fair campaign practices statutes. The DFL has appealed the revocation, arguing procedural issues in the decision-making process.
