Largest US Lutheran denomination installs Yehiel Curry as its first Black presiding bishop

Minneapolis, MNReligion

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America appointed Rev. Yehiel Curry as its first Black presiding bishop, marking a historic milestone for the predominantly white denomination. Curry, elected on July 30, succeeds Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, the first woman to lead the ELCA, and his term commenced on October 1. He expressed hope for greater representation of leaders of color within the church.

The ELCA has faced challenges, including a decline in membership from 5. 3 million in 1988 to 2. 7 million today, alongside theological disputes over LGBTQ+ inclusion. Curry's leadership comes at a time when the church seeks to invest in multicultural ministries while maintaining ties to growing Lutheran communities globally. As a former social worker and public school teacher, Curry's journey to ministry reflects the church's efforts to grow diverse congregations.

His appointment signifies a shift in American Lutheranism, which has been largely characterized by its Scandinavian and German roots. Curry's predecessors as African American Lutheran leaders have paved the way for this landmark moment.
