Mass shooting at encampment involved Illinois drug dealers and fight over territory, charges say

Minneapolis, MNLocal News

Trivon Leonard Jr. has been charged in connection with a deadly shootout at a Minneapolis homeless encampment, which resulted from a drug territory dispute. The incident, which left one person dead and six others injured, took place shortly after another mass shooting in the area. Witnesses reported that Leonard and another group of drug dealers clashed over who had the right to sell drugs at the encampment. Surveillance footage captured Leonard fleeing the scene, and police linked him to the crime through video of his jail release.

In his possession at the time of arrest were suspected drugs and a fake ID. The city responded to the violence by closing the encampment, a known site for drug dealing. Leonard's criminal history includes multiple felony convictions in Illinois, and he is currently on parole. The investigation remains ongoing as officials aim to address the rampant drug activity in the area.
