Former Minnesota Teacher of the Year found guilty of sexually assaulting his 14-year-old student
Abdul Jameel Wright, a former Minnesota Teacher of the Year, was found guilty of first-degree criminal sexual conduct against a 14-year-old student in his English class at Harvest Best Academy. The victim testified that Wright groomed her over several months, starting in 2016, shortly after he received the prestigious award. The judge confirmed the prosecution's evidence met the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Following the verdict, Wright's attorney sought to keep him out of custody until sentencing; however, the judge ordered him taken into custody due to a presumptive prison sentence and prior indications of potential flight. The victim's father expressed relief, stating they felt vindicated after a long struggle, and noted the emotional toll on his daughter.
Additionally, the victim's family is pursuing a civil lawsuit against Harvest Best Academy for the incident. Wright testified during the trial that he did not penetrate the victim but admitted to having sex with her in phone calls recorded by her mother. The case highlights serious concerns about the conduct of educators in positions of authority.
