Annunciation community gathers for its first weekend Mass since Wednesdays tragedy
The Annunciation parish community gathered for a poignant Mass on Saturday, mourning the loss of two children and the injuries of 21 others from a shooting during a Mass on Wednesday. Held in the Annunciation School auditorium, the service reflected the community's need for healing and normalcy. Archbishop Bernard Hebda emphasized the importance of returning to familiar practices, sharing a touching story of two injured girls who held hands and prayed together in an ambulance. Rev. Dennis Zehren, who was present during the tragic event, delivered a homily centered on humility and light amid darkness, acknowledging that worship in the usual sanctuary is currently impossible.
He expressed gratitude for the community's support and resilience, likening their strength to the biblical story of Moses, where community members helped lift his arms in prayer. The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed the number of injured has risen to 21, including 18 children and three adults. The tragedy has resonated deeply with the local community, as many visitors brought flowers and well wishes to honor the victims. This gathering marks a significant moment for the Annunciation parish as they begin to navigate the path toward healing.
