Minnesota DFL revokes Omar Fatehs endorsement for Minneapolis mayor

Minneapolis, MNLocal News

The Minnesota DFL took the unprecedented step of revoking the endorsement of state Sen. Omar Fateh for the Minneapolis mayoral race due to substantial flaws in the voting process at the party's convention. A report from the DFL's Constitution, Bylaws and Rules Committee highlighted that the electronic voting system miscounted votes, specifically undercounting the first ballot by 176 votes. Consequently, candidate DeWayne Davis was improperly excluded from the second round of voting. Fateh's co-campaign manager criticized the ruling as disenfranchisement, claiming it disregarded the choices of thousands of Minneapolis caucus-goers.

The decision strips Fateh of party resources and recognition as the DFL-backed candidate, potentially altering the dynamics of the mayoral race. The ruling is anticipated to deepen the divide between the party's progressive and moderate factions, especially as Mayor Jacob Frey seeks a third term. Frey welcomed the decision, emphasizing the need for a fair process and a debate on the city's future. Fateh's campaign remains resolute, stating they will continue to pursue victory despite the setback.
