Light-rail extension moves ahead with federal approval, but funding for the 3B project still uncertain
The Federal Transit Administration approved an environmental review for the Blue Line light-rail extension, allowing the Met Council to seek federal funding for the project. Initially proposed at $990 million, the estimated cost has ballooned to $3. 2 billion, casting doubt on the project's viability amid Republican efforts to cut funding programs. Met Council officials expressed concerns about the uncertainty of federal investment and plan to apply for a Capital Investment Grant in spring 2026. If awarded, construction could start in 2027.
Additionally, the FTA's approval allows the Met Council to allocate $10 million to support affected residents and businesses during construction. Some lawmakers, including state Rep. Kristin Robbins, question the need for light rail over bus rapid transit, which they argue is more flexible and affordable. A state-mandated study comparing the two transit options will provide insights by next June. This ongoing debate highlights the challenges and community concerns surrounding the costly project.
