Teenager who allegedly killed 11-year-old in Minneapolis will not face murder charges
A 16-year-old will not face murder charges for the shooting death of 11-year-old Amir Atkins in Minneapolis due to evidence suggesting self-defense. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office charged the teenager with possession of a firearm, as Amir allegedly pointed what appeared to be a gun from a stolen vehicle before being shot. Surveillance footage captured Amir leaning out of a stolen Kia, while the suspect reportedly jumped into a nearby Honda Fit and shot him in the head. Witnesses identified the suspect, who acknowledged his presence in the footage but denied firing the weapon. Attorney Mary Moriarty lamented the loss of Amir, urging a reassessment of systemic failures contributing to gun violence among youth.
Police Chief Brian O'Hara also acknowledged the pain experienced by families affected by such tragedies. Organizations focused on reducing violence in the Twin Cities released a statement calling for an end to gun violence among young people. They urged the community to find alternative conflict resolution methods.
