An Aquatennial first Torchlight parade canceled due to potential for severe weather
The Aquatennial canceled its Torchlight Parade, traditionally held in the Twin Cities, due to severe weather risks on Wednesday evening. Adam Duininck, president of the Minneapolis Downtown Council, noted that this marks the first cancellation in the event's long history. The National Weather Service warned of damaging winds and large hail, raising safety concerns for attendees. Additionally, an air quality alert was issued due to wildfire smoke from Canada, further complicating the situation. Organizers explored moving the parade to an earlier start time but ultimately decided against it for safety reasons.
Other related events, including Loring Park Family Fun Night, were also impacted by the weather. The festival has faced reductions in recent years, previously cut to four days due to financial issues. This year's Aquatennial will continue with water ski shows and fireworks scheduled for Saturday night.
