Hundreds from across U.S. to compete in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Minneapolis
The 44th annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games launched in Minneapolis, featuring over 530 athletes from 41 states competing in various sports. Events include archery, rugby, and soccer, emphasizing athleticism among veterans with disabilities. Sponsored by the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the games will last through Tuesday.
Karl Olson, a participant and treasurer of the Minnesota PVA, noted the deep connections forged among veterans, calling it a “life-changing” experience. Sandi Braunstein, who underwent amputation, shared her excitement about competing in front of her daughters for the first time. Pat Kelly from the Minneapolis VA Health Care System expressed pride in hosting the games after extensive preparation. The event serves to inspire both participants and spectators, highlighting the resilience and determination of veterans. Local veteran Bruce Henderson plans to show visitors around while participating, showcasing Minneapolis's offerings.
