These five intersections will be the first in Minneapolis with cameras to catch speeders
Minneapolis city officials revealed plans to implement speed cameras at five intersections as part of a pilot program aimed at reducing reckless driving. These locations were chosen due to a high percentage of drivers exceeding speed limits, contributing to numerous injury crashes. The cameras will be active starting in September, with a month-long warning period before fines are introduced in October for repeated violations. Up to 11 more intersections may be equipped with cameras by 2026, increasing to as many as 42 by the end of the pilot in 2029. A contract worth $12 million has been approved to operate the system, with hopes that ticket revenues will cover costs.
Data shows that speeding can decline by as much as 97% when cameras are present, enhancing road safety. The city's Vision Zero initiative aims for zero serious injuries or fatalities by 2027. Over 80% of residents support the implementation of these cameras to address their primary traffic concern—speeding.
