Roper The community steps up to save Loring Parks dandelion fountain

Minneapolis, MNLocal News

The Berger Fountain in Loring Park has been dry for five years due to leaks, leading local residents to initiate a fundraising campaign aiming for $2. 6 million to restore it. Currently, the campaign is about halfway to its goal, with support from Friends of Loring Park and Citizens for a Loring Park Community. The planned renovation includes a complete overhaul of the fountain's underground vault and a new plaza that improves accessibility, particularly for those with mobility challenges. Jana Metge, a local coordinator, highlighted the fountain's role in providing urban tranquility.

Public funding has already provided $400,000 from Park Board maintenance and $200,000 in state Legacy dollars, alongside $300,000 from park dedication fees. Neighbors are also seeking corporate and foundation support to meet their funding target. The Park Board's long-term plan includes $1. 8 million for repairs, but that funding won't arrive until 2028, prompting locals to take action sooner. The community hopes to reactivate the fountain by 2027, enhancing the park's atmosphere and accessibility.
