HCMC workers call for outside investigation of alleged discrimination and retaliation
Union workers at HCMC are calling for Hennepin County commissioners to initiate an independent investigation into ongoing claims of discrimination and retaliation against employees. During a news conference, medical staff, including medical assistants and physical therapists, voiced their concerns about harassment within the hospital's management. Attorney Sellano L. Simmons highlighted that employees raising legitimate issues often encounter retaliation rather than support. Hennepin Healthcare System, which oversees HCMC, stated that it investigates complaints of harassment and discrimination.
Workers reported systemic issues, particularly affecting women of color, who face additional challenges when speaking out. Sara Franck, president of AFSCME Local 2474, criticized management for neglecting employee accountability and transparency. Union leaders have raised alarms about financial mismanagement leading to a nearly $130 million budget deficit. The County Board recently tabled a $20 million loan request from the hospital as it faces significant financial challenges.
