Travel headaches ahead as portions of 3 Twin Cities area freeways close for weekend

Minneapolis, MNLocal News

Twin Cities drivers will face significant detours this weekend as portions of I-494, I-35E, and I-694 close from 10 p. m. Friday to 5 a. m. Monday.

The closures are part of a larger construction initiative that has already reduced lane availability, leading to traffic congestion. Specifically, six miles of I-694 will shut down, forcing drivers onto detours via northbound I-35W and westbound Hwy. 610. In addition, a 10-day shutdown of the eastern end of the Metro Transit Green Line will begin Friday night, with buses replacing train service. MnDOT is conducting repairs and painting on nine bridges over I-94 and I-35E, further complicating east-west travel between Minneapolis and St.

Paul. Riders are advised to consider alternative routes, such as Route 94 or the new Metro B Line bus service. This maintenance project aims to enhance safety and infrastructure longevity. As traffic conditions worsen, officials urge drivers to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time.
