Cyberattack deals major blow to Minneapolis affordable housing push

Minneapolis, MNLocal News

Housing in Action, a nonprofit developer in north Minneapolis, has paused all repair and construction work this summer after hackers stole nearly $800,000 in a targeted cyberattack. Executive Director AsaleSol Young reported that the organization is collaborating with the FBI and Minneapolis police to investigate the breach. In an effort to recover, Housing in Action is selling empty lots and appealing for donations to avoid selling existing rental properties, which would further diminish affordable housing options in the community. The Minneapolis police investigation remains open, though recovery of the stolen funds is deemed nearly impossible. The organization has a 30-year legacy in rehabilitating neglected houses and promoting affordable housing initiatives.

Karen Graham, a cybersecurity consultant, highlighted the challenges nonprofits face in securing their operations due to limited resources. The incident reflects a broader concern for nonprofit organizations, which can become easy targets for cybercriminals. Housing in Action's mission to aid low-income families is now at risk, emphasizing the urgent need for support.
