Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis to reopen to the public Aug. 9

Minneapolis, MNLocal News

Minneapolis’ Stone Arch Bridge will reopen on August 9 after over a year of repairs, two months ahead of schedule. The reopening celebration will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a. m. with food trucks and live entertainment. Kevin Walker from the state Department of Transportation confirmed the reopening date, emphasizing its significance for local residents.

The bridge has been a vital pedestrian link across the Mississippi River, connecting downtown Minneapolis and the St. Anthony Main area. The $38. 5 million project aimed to upgrade the bridge’s structural condition, with the northern half closing in April 2024 and the southern half closing in December. Originally built between 1881 and 1883 for railroad use, the Stone Arch Bridge was converted for pedestrian access after 1982.

Its reopening will restore an important route for pedestrians and enhance local connectivity. The event is expected to attract community members and celebrate the completion of a significant infrastructure project.
