Minneapolis leaders look to head off July 4th chaos
Minneapolis officials are ramping up public safety measures ahead of the July 4th celebrations, with increased patrols and road closures to mitigate disturbances. Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated that closures will be implemented around Boom Island and Bde Maka Ska, areas known for problematic behavior during past festivities. In 2023 and 2024, Bde Maka Ska ranked first in 911 calls among the city’s parks. Last year, police made over two dozen arrests in Dinkytown due to illegal fireworks and violence. Authorities will also monitor social media for threats, responding to posts that incite violence against officers and civilians.
Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt will enhance patrols to address issues with drunken boaters and drivers. Park staff will serve as ambassadors, assisting police in smaller parks. These actions aim to ensure a safe Independence Day for all attendees.
