Firework kills 13-year-old boy on July 4

Michael Turner, a 13-year-old from Naytahwaush, Minnesota, died on July 4 after a firework he was holding launched and struck him in the chest. Witnesses saw him pointing the lit firework away from himself before it malfunctioned, resulting in the tragic accident. First responders arrived at the scene at 11:14 p. m. and performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

The local community is mourning his loss, with the Naytahwaush Community Council organizing a gathering to support residents. Fireworks injuries remain a significant concern in Minnesota, with two fatalities and 132 injuries reported since 2019. On average, the state sees about 75 hospital visits each year due to fireworks-related incidents, with nearly 45% of those injuries involving children. Officials recommend using only legal fireworks and adhering to safety protocols to minimize risks during celebrations. The incident is still under investigation, and an autopsy is pending.
