Future uncertain for some 50th and Penn businesses following building damage in February water main break
Terzo and Sparrow Cafe will not reopen after suffering significant damage from a February water main break in southwest Minneapolis, while Paperback Exchange is working on a potential return. Owner Andrew Hersey indicated they lack a definitive timeline or location for reopening due to ongoing challenges with insurance claims. Carroll Peterson, the building's owner, expressed disappointment over the city's refusal to provide compensation despite prior assurances. The Broder family, who operated Terzo for 12 years, cited family commitments and a deli expansion as reasons for closing. Jasper Rajendren, co-owner of Sparrow Cafe, pointed to rising costs and inadequate insurance coverage as barriers to reopening.
Only one of the four businesses previously in the building, Theisen Renovation, is confirmed to return. Peterson noted that repairs on the building's apartments are nearly complete, generating interest from potential tenants. The situation reflects broader concerns about city support for businesses affected by infrastructure issues.
