Council Discussions on Mill Creek Annexation
The Mill Creek City Council is actively seeking community input on a proposed annexation to South Snohomish County Fire & Rescue, driven by the expiration of its current fire service contract. With the existing provider, Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue, set to nearly double costs, the city is exploring more cost-effective alternatives. City Manager Martin Yamamoto highlighted that South County Fire provides similar quality services at a lower rate, offering substantial savings for residents. Two public meetings are scheduled for February 1 and 8, where community members can share their thoughts and ask questions regarding the annexation. The council plans to make a decision about placing the annexation proposal on the April 26 special election ballot during the February 8 meeting.
If voters approve the annexation, it would take effect in August 2022, altering the payment structure for fire and emergency medical services. Currently, Mill Creek property owners pay a combined property tax levy of $0. 88 per $1,000 for these services, which could shift under the new arrangement. The decision will impact not just fire services but could also influence funding for other city services like police and parks.
