New Police Chief Appointed

Chris Sutter has been appointed the new Police Chief of Mercer Island, effective July 8, 2024, succeeding the recently retired Chief Ed Holmes. City Manager Jessi Bon made the announcement on July 2, 2024, after a national search for candidates. Sutter brings over three decades of law enforcement experience, including 24 years in leadership roles within Washington state. His vision for the Police Department includes enhancing community engagement, maintaining high policing standards, and focusing on officer training and well-being. Bon praised Sutter's community-focused approach and his understanding of local police initiatives, such as marine patrol.

Sutter expressed his honor in taking on this role and committed to fostering trust within the community. Prior to Sutter's start date, Commander Jeff Magnan will serve as Interim Chief. The community will have the opportunity to welcome Sutter at an upcoming Coffee with a Cop event, details of which will be announced soon.
