Crayons, a coloring book and a Bible Marysville Custody Team commended
Marysville Police Chief Erik Scairpon praised the Custody Team for their exemplary care of an inmate undergoing a severe mental health crisis. The individual was booked for multiple charges, including assault, and spent nine days in the Marysville Jail before being transferred to a more appropriate facility. During his time there, he exhibited troubling behavior such as suicide threats and self-harm, yet the staff managed to care for him without using force. Officers provided him with crayons, a coloring book, and a Bible, demonstrating a commitment to treating him with dignity and respect. Their efforts included arranging for showers and actively seeking a more suitable housing option.
After nine days, the inmate was successfully transported to Providence Hospital for mental health treatment. Chief Scairpon emphasized that the staff's humanity and professionalism contributed to the successful management of a challenging situation. This case underscores the need for compassionate approaches in correctional settings, especially for individuals facing mental health issues.
