Marysville Police deploy new body-worn cameras and evidence system

Marysville, WALocal News

The Marysville Police Department has launched a new body-worn camera system aimed at increasing transparency and trust between officers and the community. Assistant Chief Jim Lawless highlighted the program's dual benefits for the community and law enforcement. The Marysville City Council approved a $1. 3 million contract with Axon, which will provide both body cameras and new Taser devices, with partial funding from a $200,000 state grant. This initiative is a direct response to a new state law mandating video recordings of felony interrogations.

The department has equipped 107 officers with body cameras that can automatically start recording during critical incidents, improving evidence collection. Officers can now upload evidence directly to an online database, enhancing efficiency in processing requests from prosecutors and public defenders. During the pilot phase, one officer reported evidence processing was 45 minutes faster than before. The department aims to further solidify its positive relationship with the Marysville community through this initiative.
