Sponsored Nonprofit Showcase Community Health Center of Snohomish County helps boost teens dental health with no-cost exams

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Community Health Center of Snohomish County (CHC) collaborates with the Edmonds School District to deliver essential no-cost dental services to students, addressing urgent oral health issues. Last year, CHC's efforts reached 2,346 patients, with 21% of those screened requiring urgent care. The Smile Check program allows students to receive dental assessments at school, ensuring access regardless of insurance status. CHC staff educate students about nutrition and proper dental care during these visits, highlighting the importance of early detection of dental issues. The Dental Sealant Program, conducted in spring, applied sealants to over 1,800 molars, preventing cavity formation.

Dr. Katherine Nguyen emphasizes the significance of preventative care, as many students face barriers to regular dental visits. School staff play a crucial role in advocating for these programs and ensuring consent forms are distributed. These initiatives not only enhance children's health but also support their academic performance and self-esteem.
