Lynnwoods new development code could require fire sprinklers in all new residential construction
The Lynnwood City Council is preparing to vote on the Unified Development Code (UDC) by June 30, which aims to enhance the city's development regulations. The UDC consolidates existing zoning and design rules, streamlining processes and aligning them with state laws. Proposed amendments include increasing housing density by allowing three units per lot, aimed at addressing affordability issues. Additionally, a requirement for fire sprinklers in all new residential construction is under consideration, supported by South County Fire Deputy Marshall Karl Long due to safety advantages. The Planning Commission has expressed concerns regarding the cost implications for accessory dwelling units, seeking a balance between safety and affordability.
The council will hold a public hearing on June 9 to gather input from residents. City staff are optimistic about the UDC's potential benefits compared to a state-provided model ordinance. Future amendments may address various local issues, including retail cannabis and short-term rentals.
