Family caregivers feeling squeezed in Washington, report finds

Lynnwood, WALocal News

AARP’s survey indicates that nearly half of Washington's 1. 3 million family caregivers are experiencing financial difficulties due to their caregiving roles. One-third of these individuals live in households earning under $50,000, with many having stopped saving or borrowed money to manage expenses. The survey reveals that 40% of caregivers provide care without assistance, leading to negative impacts on their physical and emotional health. A significant portion of caregivers also struggles to access affordable services like in-home care and transportation.

Washington's long-term care program, WA Cares, is set to start next July, aiming to support residents in affording long-term care. AARP backs the program, calling it a vital first step in addressing the challenges faced by caregivers. The state anticipates a dramatic rise in its elderly population, increasing the urgency for effective caregiving solutions. The survey underscores the need for more resources and support as Washington prepares for an aging demographic.
