Edmonds Waterfront Center Environmental Series Sept. 11 Caring About Our Roads, Car Tires and Coho Salmon

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Edward P. Kolodziej, an environmental chemist at the University of Washington, will speak at the Edmonds Waterfront Center on September 11 at 6 p. m. His research has uncovered the link between urban runoff and coho salmon mortality, identifying 6PPD-quinone from tire rubbers as a significant threat. This compound leads to salmon deaths during rainstorms, emphasizing the urgent need for better stormwater management practices.

Kolodziej's findings have implications beyond Washington, as similar toxicity has been observed in various trout species globally. The event is part of Annie Crawley's Environmental Speaker Series, aimed at increasing public awareness of environmental issues. Admission costs $7. 50, and accessibility features will be available for deaf and hard-of-hearing guests. Local policymakers are encouraged to consider “salmon-safe” tire reforms to protect aquatic ecosystems.

Kolodziej's contributions to sustainability science earned him the title of U. S. National Champion for the 2023 Frontiers Planet Prize.
