Mayor Bass Signs Budget And Announces Plan To Restore LAPD Hiring with Council Leadership
Mayor Karen Bass signed a balanced budget that restores LAPD hiring levels by adding 240 recruits, with funding to be identified within 90 days. This budget addresses homelessness and preserves vital services like street repair and library programming amid challenging financial conditions. Council President Harris-Dawson noted the importance of collaboration in achieving a responsible budget that meets city needs. The plan includes restoring over 1,000 city positions previously at risk of layoffs to ensure the delivery of essential services. New investments will enhance the Los Angeles Fire Department with more resources and paramedics while maintaining funding for all sworn officers and firefighters.
The budget also aims to protect funding for homelessness initiatives, contributing to a decrease in homelessness for the first time in years. Additional resources will support capital infrastructure projects, including improvements to the Sepulveda Basin and recreation facilities. The budget reflects a commitment to innovative solutions and a collaborative approach to address Los Angeles' challenges.
