The Los Angeles Local News Initiative appointed Kristen Muller as its founding executive editor to lead a new nonprofit newsroom dedicated to enhancing local journalism. Muller will oversee the launch of neighborhood publications throughout L. A. County, expanding from the community-focused model of Boyle Heights Beat. The initiative aims to provide original, fair reporting while collaborating with local media organizations to ensure greater accessibility to journalism.
Muller highlighted the necessity for news that connects communities and holds power accountable, stating, 'We need a new kind of local news—one built by and for communities. ' With over $17 million raised, the initiative seeks to address the significant decline in local journalism resources. As part of the launch preparations, several job openings have been announced, including positions for managing editors and audience heads. The initiative's collaborative approach aims to elevate diverse stories and engage with all residents of Los Angeles.
