About | Los Angeles Local News Initiative

Los Angeles, CALocal News

Los Angeles leaders raised nearly $15 million to launch the L. A. Local News Initiative, which aims to provide independent local news to residents. The initiative will create new publications modeled after successful hyperlocal journalism programs, such as Boyle Heights Beat, and will train residents to cover public meetings through a local affiliate of the Documenters Network. Collaborations with nearly 20 media outlets, including LAist and CalMatters, will enhance election coverage and voter engagement, ensuring that local residents can easily access voter resources.

The initiative addresses information gaps by investing in region-wide reporting teams to cover local and California issues. It aims to generate dozens of new local journalism jobs while maintaining high editorial standards. All produced content will be freely accessible and available for republishing, promoting a more informed community.
