Hughes fire surpasses 10,000 acres near Castaic evacuations ordered and 5 Freeway reopens

Los Angeles, CALocal News

The Hughes fire erupted on January 22, 2025, engulfing over 10,000 acres in northern Los Angeles County, particularly near Castaic Lake. The fire, fueled by dry brush and strong Santa Ana winds, was reported shortly after 10:30 a. m. and has prompted evacuation orders in surrounding areas. As of late Wednesday, the fire is only 14% contained, creating a significant challenge for firefighting crews.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of structural damage, which is a relief for residents in the vicinity. More than 4,000 personnel are actively engaged in firefighting efforts, employing ground and air resources, including helicopters capable of dropping substantial water loads. L. A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone remarked on the dynamic nature of the situation, acknowledging the difficulties in controlling the blaze.

Fire crews will continue to work overnight to extinguish any remaining hot spots. For the latest evacuation updates, residents are encouraged to monitor local resources.
