Council approves service expansions to better address community behavioral health needs

Los Angeles, CALocal News

The Santa Monica City Council is taking a significant step towards improving behavioral health services in the community, responding to critical needs identified in recent assessments. In March 2025, the council approved a decentralized expansion model aimed at enhancing adult crisis care and children's behavioral services. The assessments conducted by Initium Health and Capstone Solutions Consulting Group revealed alarming gaps in existing services, highlighting that many are at capacity and difficult for individuals to access. The decentralized model allows for the gradual expansion of services, accommodating the city’s budget constraints and real estate limitations. Key initiatives include securing dedicated beds at the Westside Urgent Care Center and collaborating with the Westside Cities Council of Governments for a regional facility.

Additionally, the city will advocate for crisis stabilization services at the forthcoming Los Angeles County Safe Landing site. These strategic efforts aim to create a more accessible and effective behavioral health system for Santa Monica residents. By prioritizing these services, the city is taking a proactive approach to ensure better mental health support for its community.
