SMPD Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Operation Planned for March 20, 2025
On March 20, 2025, the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) will conduct a comprehensive traffic safety operation from 6 a. m. to 8 p. m. , focusing on dangerous driver behaviors that threaten the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.
The operation will target common violations, including speeding and failing to yield, which can lead to severe accidents. The SMPD emphasizes the importance of mutual respect among all road users, highlighting that cyclists and pedestrians share the same rights as motorists. To enhance safety, the department provides specific guidelines: pedestrians should use crosswalks and be visible, while drivers must slow down at intersections and avoid blocking crosswalks. Cyclists are urged to obey traffic laws, use hand signals, and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, this initiative reflects a proactive approach to reducing potential accidents.
The SMPD's efforts aim to foster a culture of safety and responsibility on the roads. By encouraging community engagement, the operation seeks to promote a safer environment for everyone.
