Addressing Homelessness City Council approves new Renters Protection Program
The Santa Monica City Council has taken a significant step towards preventing homelessness by approving a new Renters’ Protection Program designed to support vulnerable renters in the community. With around 70% of Santa Monica residents renting their homes and 32% classified as housing "at risk," this initiative is vital for the local population's stability. The program expands the Right to Counsel Program, providing essential legal support to tenants facing eviction, and introduces a Flexible Financial Assistance Program to help those at risk of losing their homes. This assistance includes immediate one-time payments, ongoing monthly support, and substantial aid for households involved in unlawful detainer cases. Funded by $7 million from voter-approved Measure GS and an additional $1 million grant, the program's phased rollout over five years will allow for adjustments based on demand and funding needs.
Housing and Human Services Director Heather Averick emphasizes the importance of this program in maintaining housing security for Santa Monica residents. The city is committed to collaborating with external partners to administer these programs effectively. Overall, this initiative reflects Santa Monica's proactive stance on homelessness prevention and housing stability, underscoring its dedication to supporting its most vulnerable citizens.
