Economic Growth Cultural Vitality Santa Monicas Art Bank expands through continued partnership with Frieze Los Angeles
Santa Monica has made a significant addition to its Art Bank collection by acquiring “Skinning the Mirror (Winter 9), 2025,” created by local artist Edgar Arceneaux during the recent Frieze Los Angeles art fair. This piece was selected from the Focus section of the fair, which is dedicated to galleries established in the last 12 years and curated by Essence Harden. The selection jury included notable figures such as Santa Monica Arts Commissioner Michael J. Masucci and Frieze Director of Americas Christine Messineo, demonstrating the credibility of the selection process. Masucci highlighted the importance of collaboration among independent curators and arts commission members in supporting emerging artistic voices.
Mayor Lana Negrete praised the partnership with Frieze Los Angeles as a vital component of the city’s strategy to enhance economic growth through art and creativity. This acquisition continues a trend established in previous years, showcasing the city’s commitment to regional artists, having previously acquired works by Edgar Ramirez and Gary Tyler. The Art Bank collection is accessible online, reflecting Santa Monica's dedication to public art. This ongoing effort reinforces the city’s reputation as a hub for cultural vitality and artistic innovation.
