Mayor Bass Recognizes Veterans, Announces Focused Effort to House More Veterans Before End of Year
Mayor Karen Bass launched the "House Our Vets" initiative, aiming to house more Veterans in Los Angeles by the end of 2025. Since its inception in January, the program has successfully housed nearly 400 Veterans with an impressive retention rate of 99%. The initiative encourages property owners to participate by easing barriers to renting to Veterans. Past federal regulations made it difficult for Veterans to access housing due to the counting of benefits as income, but advocacy led by Bass has changed this. HACLA is focused on expediting the housing process through improved application procedures and parallel processing for property owners.
This includes a dedicated phone line and online resources for Veterans seeking housing. Mayor Bass emphasized the urgency of the initiative, stating that Los Angeles has enough housing vouchers to house all homeless Veterans. The collaborative effort demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that no Veteran is left to sleep on the streets.
