Mayor Bass Announces New Initiative on Animal Welfare

Los Angeles, CALocal News

Mayor Karen Bass unveiled a new initiative to address animal cruelty in Skid Row, a neighborhood with a high volume of animal welfare requests. This program, a collaboration between LAPD and Los Angeles Animal Services, will deploy specially trained officers to investigate cases of neglect and cruelty. Officers will receive extensive training on recognizing signs of animal abuse and will be provided with resources to assist pet owners. The initiative aims to keep pets with their owners while holding offenders accountable. Additionally, the program will offer immediate relief to pet owners, including food and supplies.

The LAPD will escalate serious incidents to the City Attorney and District Attorney for prosecution. This pilot program has the potential to expand citywide if successful. Angelenos are urged to report crimes against animals through Crimestoppers or by dialing 911.
